Altitude Acclimatization & Volcano Safety
Central Java’s highest volcanic cones—Mount Sumbing (3,371 masl), Mount Sindoro (3,153 masl), and the Dieng Plateau’s Mount Prau (2,590 masl)—offer some of Indonesia’s most iconic trekking. When ascending past 2,500 meters, proper pacing, hydration, and weather vigilance ensure a safe expedition.
1. Pacing & Altitude Management
Maintain the “rest-step” rhythm during steep scree sections. Drink 3 to 4 liters of fluid daily with electrolyte replacement. Avoid rapid elevation gain without rest intervals.
2. Active Volcano Precautions
Mount Sumbing and Sindoro possess active fumarole fields. Sulfur fumes can intensify near crater rims during early morning temperature inversions. Always carry an N95 mask or damp buff when approaching the crater edge.
3. Sudden Weather Changes
Tropical mountain weather can shift rapidly from blazing sunshine to intense rain. Never separate from your guide, and ensure all electronics and dry clothes are double-bagged inside waterproof dry sacks.
